ShootSteel.com Plate Racks and AR550 Static Target Plates: The Sound of Steel

ShootSteel.com provides an affordable way to start shooting steel, building your collection of plate racks and static target plates.

ShootSteel.com Plate Racks and AR550 Static Target Plates: The Sound of Steel

ShootSteel.com offers a variety of affordable static-steel targets. We recommend starting with the 12-inch by 20-inch Static-Target package ($211), which includes the silhouette-style plate, X-base, hanger and necessary hardware.

Feedback. We all want it. It’s motivating when our attempts at hitting an intended target are confirmed, which is what shooting steel does. Many can’t afford to purchase a plethora of steel targets all at once, or even the more expensive reactive targets, but most of us can afford to purchase one static target and then grow a collection one piece at a time.

At Guns & Ammo we shoot steel throughout testing and training, and we value the time it takes to assemble, disassemble and transport our targets to and from clubs, private properties and public ranges. And at this point, we would like to introduce you to ShootSteel.com. (The web address is also the brand’s name.)

Though ShootSteel.com offers a variety of targets such as an affordable approach to a plate rack (Speed Rack, $347), their line of AR550 static steel target plates and target stands are the most affordable and easiest way to start shooting quality steel.

Adding a round steel target to an order starts at $20. We recommend purchasing it with a spare target hanger ($34) to quickly change out the type of target while using the same 2x4 and base. Before you know it, you’ll want another target stand ($96) for multiple targets.

ShootSteel.com sells unpainted target plates in lighter 3/8inch thicknesses to heavier, rifle-caliber-resistant half-inch AR550 steel, and magnum-caliber options including three-quarter-inch-thick AR550 steel swingers that can withstand .50 BMG.

The static-steel targets easily assemble, using an energy-absorbing target hanger assembly (including a half-inch carriage bolt, stainless steel spring and locknut), a 2x4 that you provide, and a static base. The old “H”-style base has been phased out for a new-and-improved “X” base, and these can be staked to the ground for maximum stability. The target plate, hanger and base can each be purchased separately or as a package. Steel AR550 face plates are also available to protect the 2x4 from spalling or errant shots.

Designed for ease of use, these targets are long-lasting and safe at prescribed distances with appropriate ammo. All you’ll need is a can of spray paint.
