Those familiar with the 4-inch SFX9 can expect a higher velocity shot from this pistol owing to the lengthened barrel, as well as a full-size traditional 1911 sight radius. This version has a 5-inch bushing barrel top-end mated with a new Solid Frame (SF) lightweight design with a 15-round flush or 18-round extended mag capacity.
The SFX9 consists of a solid aluminum frame made with the Wilson Combat X-Tac tread pattern that improves control with a non-abrasive grip, which the company says will feel comfortable in all shooting conditions. The SFX9 slide assembly system keeps Wilson’s “Enhanced Reliability System” (ERS) for 9mm 1911’s. The ERS is designed to accommodate the varying power levels of 9mm ammunition, and is designed for reliability in all conditions, including when heavily fouled and low on lubrication.
Cosmetic features include a tri-top slide profile with user-replaceable front site, reliability-enhancing reduced frame rails, and a user-serviceable external extractor. The SFX9 will also be available for order with different trigger, finish and sight options, including machining for red dot sights.
G&A’s Tom Beckstrand was able to get hands-on with the 4-inch SFX9, featured in our February 2022 issue of Guns & Ammo. Tom had some very good things to say about that model, noting: “Wilson’s engineers took everything they’ve learned through several decades of building accurate and reliable 1911s and came up with a better pistol of their own.” Given this, we have high hopes for the 5-inch version now available.
