Winchester Model 70 Chambered in .300 H&H Magnum: Not Original
Winchester Model 70 rifles were available in 20-inch barreled carbine versions, so one chambered in .300 H&H Magnum is dubious.

Question: Years ago I picked up a used Winchester pre-’64 Model 70 in .300 H&H Magnum made in 1951. It has a 20-inch barrel, and I don’t believe it was cut, but I can find no evidence that Winchester made such a model. Your thoughts?

Answer: Curious piece, and I must say that I am rather dubious it’s original. First off, though Model 70s were available in 20-inchbarreled carbine versions, one in .300 H&H Magnum would be odd, to say the least. I’m inclined to believe it was shortened as the photos you sent show there is no front sight, nor does there appear to be a provision for one. Factory records on this rifle in the period yours was made are rather spotty. It would probably be worth your while to check with the Cody Firearms Records Office at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and see if they have any information on it. If original and in good shape it could bring a good sum. I am loath to give any quote without further information concerning its viability.
