Streamlight, a leading manufacturer of duty-quality lighting products, released its first security device: SpeedLocker. This lightweight, portable, locking storage container is constructed of high-impact polymer and features a folding carry handle. At 12.4 inches long, 8.2 inches wide, and 2.78 inches high, the foam-lined SpeedLocker is an excellent option for storing a handgun or other valuables. What really sets the SpeedLocker apart from tech-age alternatives is the mechanical keypad.
Since a mechanical keypad doesn’t depend on batteries or electronics, it provides a more reliable entry method. However, since the SpeedLocker only features five keys, it might be possible for a determined thief to eventually enter the correct combination. The SpeedLocker is not meant to provide the same level of security as a safe, rather, it offers increased security while allowing rapid, one-handed access to its contents.
The SpeedLocker is a portable, locking storage container designed to secure a handgun or other valuables, affording the user with ready access. The unit features a patented mechanical keypad, which can be set to one of 31 combinations using an Allen wrench. Measuring 12.4 inches long, 8.2 inches wide, and 2.78 inches high, the SpeedLocker weighs 2.6 pounds and has a folding carry handle. Foam inserts help to protect and secure the unit’s contents. A supplied padlock can be used for additional security while mounting holes enable it to be secured to a hard surface. If the wrong combo is entered, the keys will stay down. Simply press down on both corners of the lid to reset the keypad. Then, enter the correct combination to open the lid.
To change the combination, open the lid and use the supplied Allen wrench to remove a combination pin located just inside the lid, adjacent to the keypad. Then, reposition it. Each key can have the pin in one of two positions. When the pin is in the top position, the corresponding key is part of the combination. When the pin is in the lower position, that key is not in use.

The supplied padlock adds an extra layer of security for when the SpeedLocker is unattended. (Photo by Alfredo Rico) Since a single-digit combination would be too easy to figure out, and a five-digit combination is even easier, the user is essentially relegated to a two-,three-, or four-digit combination. Three seems to make the most sense, as there are many possible combinations to hinder unauthorized access by someone randomly pressing keys, yet it’s easy enough to remember and enter.
For additional security, the supplied padlock can be incorporated. Although the SpeedLocker would be a good way to store a gun in your checked bag when flying, a second padlock lock may be required to secure the case to TSA’s requirements. If the TSA agent can get a finger inside the case when it’s locked, they typically won’t accept it. For other valuables, the single padlock should suffice.
