M16 vs. M14: Which Is Better?

Want to start a good argument? Debates the merits of the M16 vs M14. That's exactly what's happening on this Direct Fire segment from Guns & Ammo TV.

The question is simple. Which is better? The M16 or the M14.

The M14 shoots 7.62x51 ammo and that is one of the primary points of contention when claiming the M16/AR15 is the better gun. The M14 delivers more punch and, according to its many fans, is better suited for urban fighting environments where obstacles such as steel doors, vehicles and sand bags are a serious concern.

On the other hand, the M16 (and it's civilian version AR15) is more easily toted for long distances and, according to its many fans, is far more accurate at long range. It's available in many configurations, is more readily available on the consumer market and accessories are abundant and useful.

The M16 has been America's service rifle for more than 50 years, and that history is certainly hard to ignore in this debate. That said, the M14 has also stood the test of time and remains a go-to weapon of choice in some circles.

So which one wins? Well, check out the video and see if you can determine the winner in this spirited debate.

Shooting 600 Yards with .300 Blackout

The .300 Blackout cartridge was developed to provide greater effectiveness than a 9mm at short and medium ranges when fired from a short-barreled suppressed firearm. Just because the cartridge wasn't designed to go long doesn't mean Rifles & Optics Editor Tom Beckstrand won't take it there, using a large-format pistol, no less. Armed with SIG Sauer's 9-inch-barreled MCX Virtus Pistol loaded with Black Hills' 125-grain TMK ammunition, Beckstrand attempts to ring steel at 600 yards with help from Hornady's 4DOF ballistic calculator in this segment of “Long Range Tech.”

For a $300 plinker or small-game getter, the Savage A17 in .17 HM2 is a fantastic little rifle. It's lightweight, accurate, incredibly reliable and fires a flat-shooting round that's much quieter than the .17 HMR. Compared to a .22LR, the .17 HM2 crushes it in every category but price per box. Ballistically, there's no contest between the two.Savage A17 HM2 Review Reviews
