You have to have solid fundamentals to be a good pistol shooter, and their importance is clear when we watch the Step Back drill in Guns & Ammo TV’s “Pros vs. Joes.” Professional shooter and law enforcement officer Chris Cerino walks G&A TV cameraman Ben LaLonde through the drill and learns the benefits of training and experience.
To make the game fair, LaLonde engages a larger target from Revolution Targets by Pendleton, as well as a larger and easier to control Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 9mm pistol. Cerino is equipped with an equally accurate, but smaller size and capacity, M&P9 Shield from the Smith & Wesson Performance Center. Shooting Revolution Target’s high-quality steel, each work their way back in 10-yard increments, challenging their fundamentals and each other until they miss.
The Step-Back drill is great to shoot with a partner since you can take turns shooting and watch each other’s fundamentals at work. The farther you get from the target, the harder it becomes to make a hit. As Cerino shows, pistols can be accurate even at distance when solid fundamentals are applied. Watch to see if the Pro or the Joe comes out on top.
