It’s time to revisit the 10mm cartridge, and there are few contemporary options better than the Springfield Armory’s Range Officer (RO) Elite Operations to test evaluate all of the new loads. Competitive shooter and author Jim Tarr team up with retired police officer and instructor Jeff Chudwin to review this feature-packed 1911 to decide if the 10mm still has a place among modern defensive firearms.
Chudwin was impressed with the Springfield’s slide-to-frame fit, noting that it felt like rails were riding on ball bearings when operating the slide. The RO Elite Officer features Springfield’s Match barrel, trigger and fitted barrel bushing, and its G10 grips are thin and as durable as any polymer frame on a modern pistol. On the other hand, Tarr enjoyed how controllable this 10mm 1911 is, even when loaded with powerful 175-grain Hornady Flexlock ammunition. Both agree that this factory pistol has a custom feel.
The 10mm cartridge is rebounding in popularity, and it is safe to say that it will excel when used in pistols such as the Springfield Armory RO Elite Officer.
