By Guns & Ammo Staff
For years, some of the most popular articles in the pages of Guns & Ammo have focused on firearms that helped shape history. Too, the demands for more walnut and steel coverage, as well as muzzleloading know-how have been loud and consistent. Now, our experts are pleased to introduce a companion publication dedicated to tracing the evolution and impact of ballistic technology. Get ready for Ball & Powder magazine.
From military arms to the earliest use of black powder, and even modern products and practices for keeping muzzleloading guns in action, this companion periodical is dedicated to firearm and history enthusiasts. For that reason, it only made sense to place Guns & Ammo’s own resident historian, Garry James, in the editor’s chair.
A quarterly publication, the inaugural Fall 2023 edition will be available on the newsstands and to subscribers beginning September 31, 2023. Articles and columns will include:
Buckskins to Bison Horns: Frontier Remedies to Keep Your Powder Dry One Hell of a Horse Pistol: U.S. Model 1836 Give Them a Volley: Personal Defense with Muzzleloaders Aim Small, Miss Small: Pre-Optic Precision Marksmanship Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle The Truth About Rifling: Every Gunsmith Knows this Dirty Little Secret Meet the Flintstones and Other Early Ignition Systems Flash in the Pan: The One-Hit Wonders of British Gunmakers Short Fuses: Most Famous Mishaps with Early Guns and Cannons Breaking the Mold: Measuring the Ballistic Coefficients of Lead Projectiles Around The Powder Horn: A Collectors Roundtable Much, much more … Can’t get enough of ramrods, blasting caps, dogheads, wheellocks, wooden stocks, brass furniture, proof marks, questionable provenance, leather slings, or greased patches? Ball & Powder is bound to be your new favorite, totally fictional read.

Ball & Powder magazine may not be real, but this rifle is! Shown is the fully-functional Italian-made Model 1816 Harper's Ferry Musket reproduction, available from Davide Pedersoli . That’s right, if you’ve made it this far there’s a good chance you were seriously interested in a new historical publication. Unfortunately, this was a totally fake announcement for a completely made-up magazine, posted to celebrate a holiday for pranksters.
But, if Ball & Powder piqued your interest and you would like to see more historical content across Guns & Ammo’s media platforms, or even as a standalone Special Interest Publication, let us know! Send us an email at GAEditor@outdoorsg.com and use “Ball & Powder” in the subject line.
