About the 1958 Guns & Ammo Volume 1, Issue 1 American publisher Robert “Pete” Petersen released the first issue Guns & Ammo in 1958, which sold for 50 cents a copy. G&A’s first issue was labeled “Summer Edition,” and its cover featured a Colt Army Model 1860 alongside a powder flask, ball caps and a box of six, .44-caliber cartridges made by D.C. Sage.
For being the first issue, it lacked advertisements throughout its pages. Instead, it was filled from cover to cover with articles that aimed to touch all aspects of the shooting community. Articles included “Modern Gunslingers”; a tour of London’s Purdey factory; and a preview of the U.S. Army’s new small arms such as the ArmaLite AR-180 that would become the Colt AR-15 and M16 family of rifles. Other topics included “How To Restore Firearms” and advice on collecting as well as hunting. Among the list of contributors, Issue 1 was notable for its articles written by legendary gunwriters such as Col. Townsend Whelen and Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper, to name a few.
