First Look: FNH USA Military Collector Series

FNH USA announced the launch of the FN Military Collector Series, a product line that will feature commercial variants of FN's most iconic and historic military designs.

The initial products to be featured in the series will be the FN 15 Military Collector M4 and M16 as well as the semi-automatic FN M249S, a replica of the fully-automatic M249 SAW or Squad Automatic Weapon in service with the U.S. military since the 1980s.

"This new line of products allows us to showcase FN's battle-proven legacy of producing firearms for militaries world-wide and passing this technology on to our commercial customers," said Mark Cherpes, president and CEO for FN America. "We're excited to bring these semi-automatic versions of the world's most iconic products to America's gun owners."

FN M249S

The M249s, chambered in 5.56 NATO, features a 20.5-inch cold-hammer-forged, chrome-lined alloy-steel barrel with a twist rate of 1:7. Unlike the fully automatic military version, the M249S operates from a closed-bolt position in semi-auto only instead of the open-bolt configuration currently in service with the U.S. military.

The M249S weighs 17 pounds empty and is 40.75 inches long and 9.5 inches high. Trigger pull is adjustable from 4-6.5 pounds. The gun operates with a belt or a standard AR magazine and comes with links and one AR magazine. The suggested retail price is $7,999.

The A2 compensator is pinned and welded to the barrel to comply with BATFE regulations. As with the M16, the M4 features an A2-style front sight with back-up iron sights.

The rifle comes with a 6-position collapsible buttstock and also features an M4 RAS adaptor rail from Knights Armament. The overall weight is 6.64 pounds. Overall length is adjustable from 30.75-34 inches, and the length of pull is adjustable from 11-14.25 inches. Trigger pull weight is adjustable from 4.75-7.75 pounds.

The rifle ships with one aluminum 30-round magazine, and the suggested retail price is $1,749.

The first three variants of the FNH USA FN Military Collector Series began shipping to distributors in winter 2015 and will be available to consumers in early 2016. Future product offerings under the series will be introduced at a later date.

A guide on how to pair .223 and 5.56 NATO rifle barrel twist rates with bullet weights. Conventional wisdom says slower twist rates wouldn't properly-stabilize a heavy bullet. On the other hand, faster rates could over-stabilize lighter bullets. This is correct in theory, however, modern ballisticians have all but debunked the over-stabilization theory. All things being equal, it is better to have too much twist than not enough.Pairing Barrel Twist Rates with Bullets for .223 and 5.56 NATO How-To
