Viking Solutions Gong Target

Viking Solutions Gong Target

The Viking Solutions gong target with steel-beam stand is quick to set up and disassemble in the field. Also offered is a model that allows shooters to use a 2x4 for a center beam, which means that we can increase the width of the frame and attach additional steel plates or hang paper targets. See more at vikingsl.com.

It's quick and easy. This new gong target is economical and durable, also. Viking Solutions developed it to withstand large-caliber firearms and made it simple to set up and stow.

Viking Solutions supplies all the hardware for both the 6-inch and 8-inch gong models. Included are 5/16-inch Grade 30 proof coil welded chains — chains that are easily found at hardware stores if they're shot and need to be replaced — powder-coated leg stands, nuts and bolts. Initial assembly took G&A staff approximately 2 minutes.

There are two versions of gong stands. The original uses a 2x4 as the beam, which allows us to choose beam length and to hang multiple gongs or paper targets. The steel beam gong stand (shown above) was introduced for shooters that want a complete out-of-the-box target. It is available with either 6-, 8- or 10-inch round gongs.

Screen Shot 2017-04-19 at 9.20.45 AMThe gongs are plasma cut from 10mm-thick NM500 sheets. We are told that this specification is used in Asia with the equivalent hardness of AR500 steel (Brinell 475-500). Hitting it provides shooters with instant gratification as it rings a ding and dances to rest. Depending on the chain length you set, the gong will usually be ready to reshoot within 10 seconds.

The NM500 is suitable for lead or copper-jacketed bullets. G&A staff tested this target using rifle cartridges up to .30 caliber (non-armor piercing, of course).

In the last six months, we had to replace nuts, bolts and chain (damn strays), but it's anyone's guess as to how many rounds it will take to determine the life expectancy of each plate. After G&A's testing, the gong itself appears as new.

The best part about shooting steel gongs? There's no target to reset. $55-$100
