The May edition of GunBroker.com's Top Selling Report presented by GunGenius.com, shows us that the Browning Superposed over/under shotgun continues to rise in the used over/under shotgun category. It moved up yet another spot and now sits at number two on the list. Despite being designed a century ago and out of regular production for almost 40 years, shotgunners still clamor for the timeless design. The first Browning Superposed shotguns were offered for sale in 1931, five years after John Moses Browning’s passing in 1926. That gives the Superposed the distinction of being the final gun ever devised by the genius mind of the renowned gunmaker. However, it would have never happened without the dedicated support of John’s son Val. Browning had been working on the Superposed for a number of years before he died, with his first patents related to the over/under design dating back to the early 1920s. His vision for the gun was to create an over/under that was a high-quality gun at an affordable price. John had finalized much of the design, but one key feature - the single selective trigger mechanism - had not been completed before his passing. As a result, the first Superposed shotguns had double triggers. Determined to finish his father’s vision, Val continued working on the design for a single selective trigger mechanism. It took a number of years, but by 1939, the Superposed shotguns were being offered with a single selective trigger as standard. The selector was incorporated into the sliding tang safety, with the over barrel being selected by moving to the left and the under barrel by moving to the right. Once the barrel has been selected, the gun can be taken off of the safe setting and made ready to fire from the selected barrel. In 1949, the Superposed was offered in 20 gauge for the first time. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that 28 gauge and .410 bore were also offered. From this point forward until the end of standard production in 1986, there were now four different sizes, five different grades of embellishment and engraving (noted as I through V), grip styles, and multiple barrel lengths from which to choose. If so desired, the gun could also be ordered as a multi-barrel set. During the gun’s 55-year production run, approximately 250,000 shotguns were produced. As a result, the variety of Browning Superposed over/under shotguns available on the used market today is downright staggering. It can be a lot to wade through, but it also ensures that there’s a Superposed configuration out there to fit any shooter’s needs, wants, or desires. If, however, you cannot find exactly what you’re looking for, brand new Superposed shotguns can be acquired through Browning International’s Custom Shop. Like all of Browning’s other designs, the Superposed shotgun was (and is) rock solid, superbly constructed, and, admittedly, maybe a little overcomplicated. Nonetheless, it is a fitting tribute to the man’s genius that his final design could be released after his death, produced for more than half of a century, and still be highly desired by shotgunners a century after he passed away.
