On February 10, 2026, Governor Larry Rhoden of South Dakota visited Silencer Central Headquarters in Sioux Falls, along with bill sponsors and representatives from the NRA and NSSF . During this visit, the governor signed Senate Bill 2 , which deregulates firearm suppressors at the state level by removing them from the definition of a “controlled weapon.” Additionally, the bill eliminates the requirement of a Federal Stamp should their NFA designation change.
“The issue we’re facing and resolving with this bill is an issue that’s present in sixteen other states, and South Dakota is taking the lead to be the first to resolve this problem at the state level.” Said Silencer Central CEO and Owner Brandon Maddox, “We’re looking forward to continue deregulation of silencers nationally, and one of the keys for that happening is being able to deregulate silencers at a state level.”
South Dakota is now the first state in the nation to remove suppressors from its list of controlled weapons, which could set a precedent for other states to follow suit.
“South Dakota is the most Second Amendment-friendly state in America, and this is yet another opportunity for us to pave the way and set an example for the rest of the nation,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “By removing unnecessary state-level restrictions, we are standing up for freedom and protecting the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens.”
