UPDATE(7/6/2025): A last-minute provision was added to the Big Beautiful Bill, reducing the cost of a tax stamp for suppressors, short-barreled firearms, and ‘any other weapons’ to $0.
The American Silencer Association released the following statement in response to this news:
"The One Big Beautiful Bill passed by Congress and sent to President Trump’s desk includes a $200 million annual tax cut for gun owners,” said Knox Williams, President and Executive Director of the American Suppressor Association. “While we fought hard on behalf of millions of Americans for full removal of suppressors and other items from the NFA tax scheme, this outcome is a critical step in our plan to dismantle the NFA once and for all. We will not stop fighting until that goal is achieved.”
ASA also joined the National Rifle Association , Firearms Policy Coalition, and Second Amendment Foundation in a joint statement announcing pending litigation to challenge the NFA following the elimination of the tax:

“When President Trump signs the One Big Beautiful Bill — which will eliminate the excise tax on suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and AOWs — he will have delivered the biggest blow to the National Firearms Act since its passage nearly a century ago. We thank President Trump for his leadership and every member of Congress who fought for law-abiding gun owners throughout the reconciliation process.
“By eliminating the excise tax on these NFA items, the OBBB will not only lift the heavy burden of an unconstitutional tax from the backs of hard-working Americans, it will also serve as a critical step towards our ultimate goal of dismantling the NFA once and for all. But there is much work yet to be done.
“While we will continue to fight for the total legislative elimination of the NFA, our organizations are proud to stand together in a new strategic lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of the NFA in Federal Court.”

UPDATE(6/17/2025): The Senate Finance Committee has released their amendments to the Big Beautiful Bill. The updated version adds the removal of Short-Barreled Rifle and Shotguns from the NFA in-addition to the House language removing suppressors. The Committee's statement and full bill details can be found here , and we've included the pertinent exerpt from the bill below.
Sec. 70436. Elimination of tax on certain devices under the National Firearms Act. Current Law: Under current law, silencers, short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns are defined as a,“firearm” under Section 5845(a). As a result of this designation, each of these devices are subject to both a $200 transfer tax under Section 5811(a) and a manufacturing tax under Section 5821.
Provision: This provision would remove silencers, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and certain other devices from the definition of “firearm” for purposes of Section 5845, resulting in the elimination of the transfer and manufacturing tax on these devices. The provision would also preempt certain state or local licensing or registration requirements which are determined by reference to the National Firearms Act by treating anyone who acquires or possesses these rifles, shotguns, or other weapons in compliance with federal statute to be in compliance with the state or local registration or licensing requirements.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE(6/5/2025): On May 22 , the United States House of Representatives passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which has headed to the Senate for consideration.
The bill contains language that will remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA) and eliminate the tax and registration requirements.
If this language makes it through the U.S. Senate, obtaining a suppressor would be no different from purchasing a firearm in the majority of states.
Contact your senator and urge them to support the pro-suppressor language in the reconciliation bill! Watch for updates at americansuppressorassociation.com.
