The 2017 NRA Annual Meetings in Atlanta showcased thousands of new firearms, ammunition, optics and accessories. These are a few examples of innovative gear that we found worth spotlighting.
Ruger's New Silent-SR 10/22 Takedown ISB
One of the most popular introductions was Ruger's new Silent-SR 10/22 Takedown ISB. "ISB" stands for Integrally Suppressed Barrel, which can be purchased as a complete rifle or as a barreled assembly that can be used with existing 10/22 Takedown models. This new suppressed system reduces sound pressure levels of standard .22LR ammo to less than 114 dB, making it safer for hearing protection and more enjoyable to shoot.
Built with a stainless steel barrel, baffles and front cap, the Silent-SR 10/22 ISB is very effective and easy to clean. The assembly unscrews with a simple 5/32-inch Allen key that allows users to access the baffle stack and then snap them apart with ease. Each baffle is machined so that it can't be reassembled incorrectly, and it takes just a minute to reassemble.

Springfield Armory Introduces the Hammer-Fired XD-E

The new Springfield Armory XD-E incorporates slim, 1-inch ergonomics and with an external hamer, a lighter recoil spring and ambidextrous manual safety system. The benefit of a hammer-fired XD is that racking the slide requires minimal effort — 27 percent less effort. This pistol offers a protective beavertail that, in conjunction with a high-grip triggerguard, affords a confidence-inspired grip. The double action (DA) trigger felt smooth and the single-action, hammer-cocked mode was crisp.
The XD-E also continues Springfield Armory's popular Grip Zones, which feature three uniquely textured areas around the grip that provide a comfortable and controllable hold. Three magazine options allow shooters to further personalize capacity and concealability. FN 509
The FN 509 is now civilian legal after doing well in the trials of the U.S. Army's Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition. It is a full-size, striker-fired 9mm pistol that was built to meet the toughest U.S. government standards. Among its list of features are new enhanced grip textures at different points around the grip, two user-interchangeable backstraps, tactile serrations at the front and rear of the slide and several internal enhancements that make the FN 509 an excellent shooter. Notably, on April 25, 2017, it was announced that the premier security provider, Brink's Incorporated, adopted the FN 509 for issue to its armed guards after extensive testing.
