For Her: 10 Best Handguns for Valentine's Day

Don't just get a snubby .38. Here are the best defensive guns for women.

For Her: 10 Best Handguns for Valentine's Day

A bouquet of flowers can cost as much as some budget guns — at least half! This year, take your loved one on a date to buy a gun. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, men often indulge themselves with the nicest guns they can afford, but when guiding a loved one through a purchase they take an inferior budget-minded approach. Are you willing to trust, carry and shoot the gun she’s competent with?

Guns & Ammo’s staff curated the “10 Best Handguns for Valentine’s Day” list from interviews with input from spouses, loved ones, colleagues, firearm instructors, competitive shooters, veterans and friends throughout the industry. There were some exceptions, but one common thread emerged from our survey. Just because she’s a girl, it doesn’t mean she wants a pink pistol or needs a snubby .38. Women care as much about reliability, safety, ease of use and accuracy as men. To ensure they stay engaged and share our passion, consider one of these for Valentine’s Day, in no particular order:

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield EZ .30 SC/.380 ACP/9mm

smith-wesson

“EZ” indicates that the M&P Shield EZ pistols are “Easy to Rack” and “Easy to Load.” Unlike the brand’s other striker-fire Shield models, the M&P Shield EZ features an internal hammer that reduces felt slide tension by half. In addition to front and rear serrations, there are two wings at the rear to provide leverage in racking the slide. This means that these pistols are ideal for those with diminished hand strength or dexterity concerns.

Available in the light-recoiling .380 ACP, extra-capacity .30 Super Carry, and the popular 9mm round — the same cartridge issued to FBI agents — the pistol in any of these calibers exhibits low felt recoil. The thin grip is easy to wrap with a full firing grip, and an intuitive grip safety ensures peace of mind when the pistol is not in use. A manual thumb safety lever is option, and ideal those wanting maximum safety features or extra recoil-compensating leverage be pressing it down with the firing-hand thumb.

Like lasers or lights? The M&P Shield EZ includes a rail on the dustcover. Like sporty versions? The Performance Center options offer models with ported barrels and slides, stylized triggers, and gold or silver accents. Lipsey’s Distributors also offers a purple frame with either a black or silver slide for Valentines who do like a colored pistol made just for them.

SIG Sauer P365 Rose 9mm/.380

sig-sauer-rose-365

SIG Sauer’s Rose Program was developed to inspire women and encourage them to take personal safety into their own hands through education, training and community. The P365 9mm and P365-380 models are just two examples of this effort.

The P365 was the 2017 Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year and has since established itself as a standard by which to compare all other micro-compact pistols by. These are accurate, reliable and easy to carry every day. Pistols in the Rose Program feature Rose Gold-colored accents such as the low-profile thumb-safety and slide lock levers, takedown lever and trigger. The slide also features a stylized Rose logo, not to mention the image of a rose integrated to the grip module’s full texture.

The Rose Program includes a line of exclusive accessories tailored to women, but a Vaultek Lifepod Pistol Safe, inert rounds, quick-start guide, Xray3 day/night sights and two 20-round magazines are standard. The P365 series has demonstrated excellent handling and shootability in both calibers.

Ruger LCP Max .380

ruger-lcp-max

Under an inch wide with a 2.8-inch barrel, and weighing less than 11 ounces, the Ruger LCP Max is easy to make part of your everyday carry (EDC). The Hi-Viz sights are easy to see, the slide easy to rack with rear wings for leverage and internal hammer, and the .380 ACP cartridge makes all these features possible.

Even with 10-plus-one rounds of capacity, the LCP Max is the same size as the LCP II. A pocket holster is provided, making carrying the LCP Max as practical and convenient as putting a wallet in the opposite pocket. The grip is ergonomic and helps control the micro during recoil but insert the 12-round magazine or add the finger-grip extension to maximize control by filling the hands for a full grip.

New for 2026, the LCP Max is optionally available with a co-witnessed Ruger ReadyDot micro reflex sight that uses a fiber optic to provide a 15-MOA aiming point. All black and black pistols with a silver Cerakote slide and titanium-nitride barrel finish are popular, but if distinctive colors are your thing, distributor exclusives are available with PVD- or Cerakote-colored slides, as well as a Talo Distributor Exclusive completely covered in a Rose Gold Cerakote.

Taurus TX22 .22

taurus-tx22

We know that the Taurus GX4 is a popular micro-compact pistol for everyday carry, but our recommendation for the most fun on a date at the range is with the Taurus TX22, the 2019 Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year.  The TX22 is a .22 LR rimfire semiautomatic that provides 16-rounds of plinking fun per magazine with a pistol having a universally comfortable grip.

Recommended

The TX22 doesn’t break the bank, and neither will a bulk pack of .22 ammunition. The TX22 is an affordable buy that’s affordable to shoot. Accuracy out to 25 yards can be enhanced with T.O.R.O. models, referring to TX22 models that are optic ready.

Several versions are available including suppressor ready versions that allow you to hear her sweet whispers, and compensated models that keep her sights on target. Compact models are easy for even the smallest statured shooters, and the TX22 Compact is available with a standard Riton optic making sighting steel targets even faster and easier. Does your lady like guns with color? Taurus introduced one model with a hard-anodized black slide over a Purple Wine-colored polymer frame, manual safety included.

Springfield Armory Hellcat 3-in. 9mm/.380 ACP

sa-hellcat

The 2020 Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year, Springfield Armory’s Hellcat 9mm with 3-inch barrel is a superior optic-ready micro backed up with an excellent set of steel night sights. At the front is a bright green day/night sight surrounded in a luminescent ring that nests neatly within the U-notch rear sight featuring a white outline for quick reference. The result extracts the pistol’s accuracy potential that averaged about 1¾ inches for a five-shot group at 25 yards. For those carrying the Hellcat as their EDC, a tactical ledge offers practical one-handed and assisted slide manipulations during a critical situation.

The 12-plus-round capacity is generous in either 9mm or .380 ACP, the latter released in 2025. The pistol is slim and light, weighing just 1 pound, and comes with a zippered soft-case that looks akin to a day planner that qualifies for off-body concealed carry.

Since the Hellcat series has been with us for a half-decade, Springfield Armory has developed California- and other state-compliant models, as well as 10-round magazines. Valentines in nearly every jurisdiction can celebrate this pistol’s low felt-recoil, comfort to carry and thoroughly supported aftermarket of accessories.

Kimber CDS9 9mm

kimber

Kimber’s “CDS” stands for acronym stands for “Covert Double-Stack.” The “9” stands for “9mm.” Covert tells us that it was optimized for concealed carry in plain sight, meaning beveled no-snag edges and low-profile sights. If your Valentine shoots better with the aid of a red-dot sight, the CDS9 is optic ready to accept all the benefits that come with running an optic such as one-handed slide racking and quick, accurate, target engagements.

Is your Valentine sensitive to the noise from gun shots? No problem, many of us are! The CDS9 is offered with an optional suppressor-ready barrel. Thread on your favorite 9mm can and you’ll find it every bit as reliable due to its internal design and spring system. Suppressors are also a great way to reduce muzzle flip from shooting heavy 147-grain defensive loads or +P ammo at the range.

With or without a suppressor, all CDS9 models sport a comfortable-feeling grip and a short trigger reach. If your Valentine has small hands, the CDS9 should prove comfortable to operate its controls despite filling the hands with a swollen grip frame designed to accept double-stack 9mm magazines for increased capacity. All Kimber pistols are regarded for tasteful styling, handsome and durable finish treatments, and ergonomic grip design. The CDS9 continues the brand’s reputation for producing top-shelf pistols built around the familiar Model 1911-type control layout, so learning how to operate the CDS9 effectively doesn’t seem to take long. The best feature that comes with a Kimber CDS9 for Valentine’s Day is that it tells her, “You’re not cheap.”

Rost Martin RM1s 9mm

rost-martin

“Buy American, or buy nothing,” some say. If you and your loved one falls in this group, and you either have familiarity or preference for G19/G17-style ergonomics and controls, look no further than the Rost Martin RM1s 9mm. The company is the product of a love story between Chris and Stefany Toomer, so suggesting an RM1s 9mm couldn’t be more practical or romantic — for him or her. All Rost Martin pistols are made in Texas, feature a red-dot ready slide, but includes a practical pairing of iron sights. Few designs could be more reliable for personal defense, and Guns & Ammo’s staff has never evaluated one that’s produced a malfunction. The RM1s is very tolerant of the different ammo types.

The recoil impulse if familiar to those who have shot striker-fired polymer-framed pistols, and especially for a 9mm. The RM1s is a very manageable gun with compensated models available to further reduce muzzle flip. Magazine capacity ensures there’s plenty on tap to engage multiple targets, and a spare mag capable of ensuring you make it home. Many Rost Martin lovers feel the best part of these pistols are the interchangeability with Glock-pattern accessories including aftermarket sights and holsters. Our favorite detail is when the slide locks to the rear on an empty mag; a bright and visible, Chartreuse-colored follower lets us know that it’s time to reload the fun.

SDS Arms MAC IX 9mm

mac1

Just like love, pistols come in different shapes and sizes. The Military Armament Corporation (MAC) IX — Roman numeral for “9,” referring to the 9mm chamber — is one such example. Not much larger than a heart-shaped box of chocolates, the MAC IX is a pistol that functions like a pistol-caliber carbine (PCC), except that it has a three-slot rail instead of a stock. It will accept your favorite stabilizing arm brace — we especially like the folding ones — and the side of thMAe receiver is grooved for a collapsing-type arm brace.

Braced or not, the MAC IX is incredibly controllable and endearing to shoot. A 30-round magazine ensures the experience last, so you’ll reload less than a typical handgun. The longer barrel means an increased velocity and excellent terminal performance for home defense. It’s light and portable, and optic ready given the generous top rail to accept red-dot sights — plus a magnifier, light and laser.

With an arm brace attached, you’ll find your love one shooting more accurately, farther, due to three points of contact and capable of sustaining tight groups for long durations due to the low felt recoil, minimum muzzle rise, smooth trigger and 30-round magazine. It’s reasonably priced and guaranteed to that fun will be shared by him and her alike. Need some quiet time? The muzzle was threaded and given a three-lug suppressor attachment.

Mossberg Cruiser 12 ga./20 ga.

mossberg

Averaging less than $300, the Mossberg Cruiser is one of the most practical and affordable alternatives to the usual boutique of flowers. It’s not a “pistol,” but it’s not technically a “shotgun” either. The Mossberg Cruiser is available in 12 gauge — which is easy to find ammo for — and 20 gauge — a little more comfortable to shoot. We believe Valentines may find the 20 gauge to be a more considerate option.

The Cruiser offers shoot-from-the-hip fun at the range, but it’s practical for home defense. Accuracy? Well, that’s relative. Pointing the Cruiser is quite intuitive and a shotgun shell’s payload can offer more effectiveness against a charging threat at indoor distances versus most handgun ammunition. Threats stop being a threat when they’re peppered with buckshot.

Indoor environments usually present unusual obstacles that make maneuvering a long arm a little more challenging to learn for some. The Cruiser, on the other hand, is undeniably portable and wieldy indoors, too. Since it’s a pump-action, any criminal intent on harm may regret their life choices from the Cruiser’s Shuck-Shuck-Boom deterrence.

Canik Mete SF9 Signature Series 9mm

canik

Perhaps your Valentine takes shooting a little more seriously than most. Perhaps that loved one sits through “John Wick” movies for the gun play. Maybe that person has their own belt rig. If so, your Valentine deserves a new 3-Gun pistols that’s ready for game night. Canik Mete SF9 Signature Series are fun creates that provide full-size grips to keep the muzzle shooting through large-capacity magazines with a mild manner. All Mete SF9 pistols are reliable and accurate, which explains why one of the world’s most highly regarded 3-Gun shooters — Taran Butler — works with these pistols to build awe inspiring works of art including those made famous in the hands of actors on the silver screen.

Toss the card this Valentine’s Day and surprise your loved one with a Canik Mete SF9 Signature Series that includes an excellent quality case, clever tools, accessories and holster. It’s optic ready and will certainly impress before she even opens the box. The Loadout Packages are usually made in limited quantity, but they’re priced competitively for what’s included. Our favorite? We like this year’s “Miami Days” and “Miami Nights.” It’s not too hot for the one you love.
