Shooting Out Of A Car

by Guns & Ammo TV   |  August 5th, 2011 10

In this clip from Guns & Ammo TV, professional shooter Rob Leatham and Training Officer Steve Horsman play out a threat scenario at the range involving shooting out of a car. There’s more to this personal defense situation than meets the eye. With multiple angles and attack possibilities, you should be well aware of how shooting out of a car differs from a face-to-face encounter.

Have you ever been involved in a personal defense scenario like this? If so, what did you take away from the experience?

  • Richard

First, I might suggest that you use the car's reverse gear to get the heck out of the situation (if possible), secondly, take out the driver side target first, passenger side second (if he has already ducked for cover), and use the car to get the guy in front. A two ton car can inflict a heck of a lot more damage than a .45 round.

    • jim

Agreed Richard. Just run the guy over. If lethal force is justified, what difference does it make?

  • Roger

why not shoot trough your windshield?

    • hicusdicus

Because you will completely miss and maybe have an eye ball or two full of broken glass.

    • Sobo

The risk of the windshield collapsing and creating blinding and slicing particles of glass is possible when taking a forward shot thru windshields, this is a last resort, practice weak arm or left arm single fire drills.

  • Bill

In my 9MM I alternate loading the magazine with FMJ +P & Gold Dots

just in case I have to shoot through something like a windshield,My

gun has never FTF or FTE using this method ???

  • hicusdicus

More gun nonsense. Put your head down and punch the accelerator.

  • Joseph

Drivers side Threat , Exit vehicle , Eliminate / Incapacitate additional attackers …
staying stationary or firing though the windshield are additional disadvantages
using the Vehicle for cover is a excellent option , not to disagree with the method here

  • GARY

Good stuff from everyone But the one method not mentioned has been effective in the past, for some. Driver's side target first. Exit car. Shoot under the car at attackers using wheels for cover.
