Handguns at Long Range…Very Long Range Dan Johnson June 3rd, 2011 | More From Dan Johnson Share0 Tweet Email Share on Facebook.Share on Twitter.Share on Google+What is long range with a handgun? It depends, of course, on the type handgun and the person behind it. After writing my previous blog on my ‘Baby” Browning I decided to give it a little range time and will say without apology that 15-yards is a long way to shoot with that particular firearm. With one of my .44 magnum revolvers 75-yards is about where I feel long range starts as beyond that you have to start making some significant corrections for bullet drop. When I get serious about long range shooting and step up to one of my Thompson Center single-shot handguns using good optics and chambered for a fast-stepping bottleneck cartridge, I do most of my practicing at 200-yards, and 300-yards is about as far as I feel comfortable shooting at game animals. I will shoot a little further if varmints are the target and considerably farther if plinking at steel gongs or other inanimate targets. There is a group of handgunners who consider all the aforementioned distances close range. The fifth annual M.O.A Long Range Handgun Match will take place June 23, 24, and 25 at Sundance, Wyoming and at this event ranges for competition start at 500-yards and go all the way out to 1000-yards. In any discipline there are those who push the envelope and those M.O.A. guys do some pushing in regards to handgun shooting. They use specialty pistols, of course. Most are customized and some wear high-powered rifle scopes, but they are still handguns and just as rifle competition has pioneered advancements that have improved the accuracy of all rifles, these guys are pioneers in the field of handgun accuracy. They also happen to be a nice bunch of guys who welcome newcomers and extend help wherever and however they can. So check out the event if you can. It is time well spent. For further info go here.
