George’s full-size 9mm pistol this season is a Taurus PT 24/7 G2. This 17-round semi-auto combines a polymer frame with a stainless steel slide into one of the most versatile pistols on the market.
Functionally, every control on the right side of the 24/7 G2 is mirrored on the left side making it completely ambidextrous. That’s an advantage in a gunfight if you’re injured and have to use only one hand—but you must train operating the gun from either hand to be effective.
Ambi thumb rests on the grip and frame ensure consistent gripping of the 24/7, and interchangeable backstraps provide for a near custom grip over a range of hand sizes. All that adds up to a naturally pointing pistol.
Adjustable three-dot sights and a smooth trigger pull provide the finishing touches needed for George to make either rapid center mass hits, or single, precise head shots.
Though we never needed it while using Hornady’s Critical Defense ammunition, the 24/7 G2 has second strike capability. Any dirty auto pistol can short-chamber a round. When that happens, the firing pin strike can fully seat the round instead of firing it. Though we train malfunction drills on PDTV for those times when a gun goes “click” instead of “bang,” an instinctive second pull of the trigger almost always happens. With second strike capability, in many cases the round will go off on the second trigger pull.
There are also a lot of safety features we like n the G2. The manual thumb safety also functions as a decocker. There are passive trigger and firing pin safeties, and both a loaded chamber and cocked pistol indicators. For unloaded storage, the G2 can also be easily key locked.
When searching for a full-size 9mm pistol as one of your essential survival tools, know that the Taurus PT 24/7 G2 is very well thought out design that combines plenty of fight-stopping capacity and the versatility to run your gun in a way that works for you with your style of training.
