The original SIG 550 and 551 received considerable attention until 1989’s Import Ban on Assault Rifles consigned them to the black hole of the high-end collector’s market. Since then, a SIG 550-type rifle has been largely unobtainable, but a few U.S. law enforcement agencies have purchased models like the SIG 552 carbine. Unfortunately, there have been a few alternatives available to civilians.
