First Look: TrackingPoint ShotGlass & New Semiauto PGF Rifles

TrackingPoint_ShotGlass_F TrackingPoint is continuing to expand the capabilities of shooters by infusing technology into firearms. The company recently introduced the world’s first pair of wirelessly-integrated digital shooting glasses, along with three new semiauto Precision-Guided Firearms (PGF).

Inspired by the wearable technology found in Google Glass, TrackingPoint’s ShotGlass connects wirelessly to any TrackingPoint PGF to enhance the user’s shooting experience with a built-in camera and high-definition heads up video display. What is seen through the PGF scope is exactly what appears on the integral wide-screen WQVGA display of the glasses, meaning the shooter can engage targets without actually looking through the scope.

Specifically, this system optimizes ReconJet heads up display hardware from Recon Instruments for use with Tracking Point’s ShotGlass app.

Shooters using ShotGlass have the ability to fire around corners, over walls and from behind trees without exposing themselves to the target or spooking any game. As with action cameras such as the GoPro, the built-in camera also records video and sound, which can be downloaded directly to smart devices.

In addition to giving users the capability to shoot around obstacles and record video, the new digital shooting glasses offer increased situational awareness. Shooters can view two separate fields of vision simultaneously: the zoomed-in visual provided by the PGF scope and the zoomed-out view from the digital glasses.

Collaborative shooting, in which a spotter using ShotGlass sees exactly what the shooter sees, is another possibility. Veteran hunters can assist new or youth hunters in the field with tagging and tracking the game they intend to shoot to ensure an ethical harvest, while military spotters can use the glasses to guide their snipers to the appropriate target in combat scenarios.

“Wearable tech, designed to enhance the shooting and hunting experience, changes the way you experience the sport,” said TrackingPoint CEO John Lupher. “ShotGlass adds an element to hunting and shooting that is beyond belief.”

The TrackingPoint ShotGlass is powered by an Android OS and is available for pre-order for $995 to TrackingPoint Precision-Guided Firearm (PGF) owners, with delivery occurring in March. ShotGlass also comes free of charge with the purchase of any TrackingPoint PGF prior to November 30, 2014.

ShotGlass is compatible with previous PGFs as well as the three new semiauto firearms, chambered for 5.56, 7.62 NATO and .300 Win. Mag.

The new TrackingPoint semiauto 5.56 rifle offers the ability to lock on to targets as far as 1/3 mile out that are moving as fast as 10 miles per hour (mph), while the 7.62 NATO rifle has a range of 1/2 mile and tracks targets moving at speeds of up to 15 mph. The .300 Win. Mag. version has a range of 1/2 mile and tracks targets moving 20 mph or less.
