New Red-Dot Sight Combo Is Perfect For AR's

SIG Sauer's premium Romeo4T red dot sight and 4x Juliet magnifier are the perfect combo to extend your AR's range.

The red dot sight (RDS) is by far my preferred optic type for a general-use, AR-pattern rifle. These optics are small, very durable and won't require a second mortgage to acquire. It's hard to imagine a better fit for a rifle that'll be used for everything from plinking to self-defense.

SIG Sauer has only been playing in the optics world for a few years, but their extensive line of red-dot sights offers options for all kinds of shooting needs.

SIG's Romeo4T RDS and Juliet4 magnifier represent a quality combination yielding tremendous optical flexibility. A shooter can take the Romeo4T from the muzzle out to 200 yards, and then add the Juliet4 magnifier to gain an additional few hundred yards of range when necessary.

STANDING OUT

The Romeo4T is the only RDS, other than the Aimpoint, that the FBI has certified for use on its agents' duty rifles. The Romeo4T is also the RDS the FBI chose to issue beginning in 2017. While many may not be familiar with the Romeo line of RDSs, the FBI has already tested it and named it their preferred optic of this type. That is a pretty significant endorsement.

The Romeo4T earned that endorsement by having several features not found anywhere else. Of course, durability was a prime consideration, but the Romeo4T doesn't have a monopoly on that.

Where the 4T does stand out is by combining extreme durability with exceptionally long battery life. Plus, shooters have the ability to switch between the four reticles found in every 4T.  The 4T gets insane amounts of battery life thanks to the Motion Activated Illumination (MOTAC) system that automatically shuts off once the optic has been motionless for two minutes. As soon as it moves, the sight instantly comes back on.

There is a small solar panel on top of the 4T that powers the reticle on sunny days. Between the CR2032 battery that powers the optic and the solar panel up top, the 4T has in excess of 100,000 hours of "battery life" between changes. If ever there was a battery-powered RDS that didn't need extra batteries, this is it.

Powerful Choices

The ease with which the shooter can change reticles is also a huge benefit. You can choose between a small illuminated cross in the center, a cross with two aiming points below the center, and both with or without a larger illuminated circle surrounding the center cross. All that's needed to cycle between the reticles is to press and hold the "+" and "-" buttons on the side.

The additional aiming points work best with the Juliet4 magnifier. Putting the magnifier behind the Romeo4T allows for good visibility of the additional aiming points for effective shots on targets out to 400 yards.

The Juliet4 magnifier is a feature-rich optic that pairs exceptionally well with the 4T. The Juliet comes with a flip-to-side mount that also has a quick-detach system. It is easy to add or remove this magnifier to a rifle.

Parallax Predicament

The flip-to-side mount can be adjusted for height with spacers that are included (thicknesses include 1.41, 1.53, and 1.63 inches). This might not sound like much but it's important for effective magnifier use.

Drop just any magnifier behind an RDS and, if the heights don't match up just right, you get horrific parallax issues. You can check to see if there's a problem by holding the rifle motionless while moving your head up and down, left and right while looking through the optic. If the heights don't match perfectly, you'll see lots of reticle movement. It's not unusual to move 10 inches at 200 yards when the heights don't match.

The mount on the Juliet4 is very solid and has everything you'd want. A detent and spring tension hold the mount in place so there's no chance of it flopping around but it flips out of the way in a flash. There is no pulling or twisting required.

The QD lever is adjustable for tension so you can get it tight enough on the rifle without crushing through the anodizing or finish. Dual recoil lugs on the underside also ensure the magnifier doesn't bounce around between the sections of Picatinny rail.

The ocular lens adjusts for focus so there is no chance of having to endure a fuzzy reticle. There are also elevation and windage adjustments on the magnifier, making it possible to center the reticle in the field of view. This helps eliminate parallax.

Reinforcement on the Range

Range time with the pair reinforced how easy both optics are to use. The 4T has push buttons on the side that I prefer more than turning a rheostat. It made adjusting illumination settings and experimenting with all four reticles quite easy. The flip-to-the-side, clear lens caps were also a nice touch. The 4T is waterproof to 60 feet for 1 hour, so there's no need to worry about getting it wet.

Being a magnifier, the Juliet4 took even less time to get set up and was super simple. The elevation and windage adjustments are exposed but recessed, so there's no cap to remove and lose when it's time to make adjustments. Recessing the turrets was a thoughtful and effective solution to preventing unwitting adjustment.

The 4T works just fine solo. But for those shooters needing some extra range periodically, the Juliet4 is the "Juliet" to the 4T's "Romeo".
