G&A Man on the Street: What’s the Biggest Threat to Gun Owners in 2014?

by G&A Online Editors   |  May 9th, 2014 38

From concealed carry reciprocity to elected officials who fail to accurately represent our voting patterns, gun owners face challenges on many fronts. Those challenges change frequently, and it’s important to remain aware of the issues and confront them as they arise.

At the 2014 NRA Show, we set out to ask fellow gun owners: “What’s the biggest threat to gun owners in 2014 and why?”

G&A Polls

The biggest threat is the anti-Constitution agenda being pushed mostly by progressives. This will not only negatively affect gun owners, but everyone.

I forgot to add the NRA are the biggest threat to gun rights!

      • ChuckB

Thanks for your input, Steve. You’re probably a teenager who doesn’t value what those who fought before us have accomplished. It’s up to us to continue the fight for freedom………. or lose it.
Please don’t tread on the graves of our soldiers.

Ourselves. We are our own worst enemies. We allow nut-case talk from the likes of “Uncle Ted,” who are the gun-owners’ version of the silliness coming from PETA and thus cannot be taken seriously by non-firearms owners who otherwise would back us on the 2nd Amendment. Even more terrible is that while we donate money to supporters like the NRA we stop at that or maybe on Election Day but fail to write well-reasoned letters and make well-reasoned and rational telephone calls to our elected officials.

    • Bob Irwin

      Spot on Brother!

    • ChuckB

Ted Nugent talks loud and clear about the dangers that some politicians, several extremely rich self-appointed czars and some media people pose to a free society. PETA, on the other hand, speaks about ridiculas concepts. Those of us who treasure our freedoms that have been paid for in blood many times over value loud and proud voices like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and – especially – Uncle Ted. Too many times we are the “silent majority” but it’s the squeeky wheel that gets the grease. We need to speak loudly, clearly and proudly of our god-given rights.
Please don’t bad-mouth those who think like us but just think more vocally. We have enough rights-haters to fight withour any in-fighting.

  • FedUpBob

Demoncrats. The governing principles of the Democrat party are fundamentally at odds with a free society. They will lie, cheat and do whatever they think necessary to gain control over every detail of your life. One of their main goals is to completely eliminate private gun ownership one step at a time. Individual freedom is a concept that scares the hell out of Democrats.

  • Teach America

The politicians in general are a huge threat but the thugs are just as big of a threat. Back in school we had things that we valued taken away because a few people wouldn’t do right and it is the same on a national level now. People are scared because nobody is teaching gun control and that is how to control a gun, when to use it, and to respect life. Life is a fragile thing and guns can be a good thing but hunters ed needs to be put back in schools along with respect others.

  • Smoke & Mirrors

All Elected Leaders that have “Turn-Coated” the very Constitution they Swore to uphold & protect. High treason comes at a price.

  • Sorzy

The biggest threat to gun owners is uninformed gun owners or gun owners who simply don’t believe or perceive there’s even a or any threat/s, non-voting gun-owners (because we can and need to vote anti-gun politicians out of office), non NRA member gun owners (because there truly is strength in numbers).

The biggest threat to gun owners is gun owners themselves for the reasons listed above. In my humble opinion anyhow. I mean, for those who say it’s the liberal politicians? Um, Just who is it that puts them in office? And sure, gun owners might not vote for them. But those that don’t vote, may as well have. Same goes for those who vote for someone who doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning.

    • ed_in_tx

There is a significant number of gun owners who simply don’t care as long as they believe THEIR firearms are safe (for now).

“Same goes for those who vote for someone who doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning.”

I take it in blue states you advocate voting for the Liberal Democrat (but I repeat myself), since no others have a significant chance of winning. As a practical matter, we’ll never know who has a chance of winning until the first Tuesday in November (at the earliest). If we leave it to the MSM and the national party “leadership” to decide the future (which nobody can with any accuracy) of who “can win”, we’ll never change the direction of the country.

That is the position of those who wish more control over their fellow citizens, that there is a compromise position which only infringes on liberty a little bit.

  • Conrad Gabbard

A majority of our population that is either ignorant of the realities or indoctrinated to believe and accept a political idology that has only suceeded with government domination of the citizenry. Unfortunately, far too many of our legislators absorbed the same indoctrintion.

  • Gun-totin’ Texan

In 2011 in (gun-free) Great Britain there were 2034 violent crimes per 100,000 people. During the same time period in the USA, that number was 426 per 100,000. Do the math. For 238 years this country has done quite well for itself without eliminating guns. In fact, the only places that could truthfully be described as dangerous places are “gun-free” zones where only criminals are armed and honest citizens become sitting ducks.

Based on that information, the biggest danger to American citizens is the presence of brain-dead, hypocritical politicians (aka Democrats).

  • nolcon

The biggest threat to America is the lack of moral values and Godless principles being put into play. Back in the 60s and 70s… most of us went to the church of our choice and we didn’t have mass school shootings and all that… we had guns at home too. It was the moral guidance taught at church that headed us in the right way. We weren’t perfect (and still aren’t) but we knew enough to keep us civil and God fearing. Well, now all that is out the window with our anything goes society. We forgot God and Jesus Christ and look where we are today. Government (and alot of people) going wild. Our glorious Der Fuhrer Obama has absolutely NO morals and is working on the destruction of our nation. We can fix this by going back to the church of our choice and worshiping God and Jesus Christ.

I carry a gun in Texas (THANK GOD I LIVE IN TEXAS) and haven’t shot anyone… don’t even want too… There are not bad guns… only bad people!

Ok, I’m ready for all the Christian haters… so go for it! Show your ignorance.

    • RPC

RPC There it is in a nutshell.

    • facialfirearms

actually we did have mass school shootings back then, they just weren’t blasted at us 24 hours a day,and nobody blamed the guns, but instead blamed the psychos.we actually are at the lowest rate f mass shootings since the beginning of the 20h century, but you wouldn’t know that from the msm because they are the propogana machine and nobody questions the god box.violent crime is now the lowest it’s ever been since recording, and citizens who stop violent crimes by being armed is the highest it’s ever been, coming in at 2.5 million in 2012.don’t forget charles whitman and the university of texas shootings, with one of the highest body counts until then(not the highest, that was in 1939),but the media didn’t portray the guns as loading themselves, jumping up and killing on their own.people were held responsible for their actions then, and they aren’t addition to that, how many pople are on mind altering drugs with a side effect of homicidal and suicidal tendencies?

On and on about it’s the democrats, the liberals ,the neo-cons,the republicans. Study on the NEW WORLD ORDER,agenda 21,etc. and youll see the real driving force behind the gun control issue,as well as all others.Google MAYER ROTHSCHILD and read his life mission, see the role his sons and the role his banks play in the world and USA affairs since then. LOOK at the wars and conflicts his organization has started, and then youl see how utterly FOOLISH it is to play into their hands by particapating in our cultures habit of blaming the other political party. It resolves absolutely nothing except to divert attention away from them….they love our ignorance. When they have their highly secured meetngs DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS ATTEND….tell ya anything? Wake up AMERICA!!!!
NO,no, its just to complicated and time consuming for me to wrap my head around, dancing with the stars is on.

There is nothing to fear. As long as the Gun Manufacturers and Retailers, using their their NRA mouthpiece to keep ginning up the paranoia, the gutless politicians will mind their masters and keep the money flowing into their coffers and the Freedom group and their compatriots will continue laughing all the way to the bank. The reality– violent crime is down and nobody is going to take your guns away, although you might experience some minor inconvenience in purchasing guns if common sense and rationality was ever allowed to inform this debate. It is all just another sad example of poorly informed and misguided one issue fanatics relying on an uncontested set of views and opinions to reinforce their ignorance. I have no misgivings about the likelihood that it will change anytime soon–uninformed emotional views constantly inflamed by piles of money working for private interests in spreading misinformation trumping facts and reality–its the American way.

  • 101nomad

I will not judge, but, sometimes I think we are our biggest threat, or those that are paid/unpaid to pretend they are us. If you have ever broken concrete slab you know once you have punched a hole, the rest will be relatively easy. Punch a hole in The Constitution Of The United States, the rest will be easy. These “United States” are not united, the hole has been punched.

Liberals, Republicans, Statists, people who think the Constitution is irrelevant, criminal advocacy groups, the media, anyone who is divisive with respect to gun issues from within the platform of gun rights (see Conceal Carry vs. Open Carry and Fudds vs. those who want NFA repealed etc.) and those who continuously link gun rights with fringe insanity of the religious right.

  • That guy over there!

Hard right pro-gunners are as much the problem as the anti-gun crowd .The NRA will support politicians that are against a women’s right to choose or a gays right to marry or want jesus in our schools and politics or attack the working poor as lazy entitled commies etc.
Too many on the pro-gun side are far too extreme in attitude or hopelessly ignorant(Ted Nugent/Sara Palin) and are driving off normal Americans .
In short. Most American’s do not relate to you , your not on the same “Wave Length” as us. Our tastes in Reading, Movies, Music, general interests are too different .
There’s millions of fellow pro-gunners out there but we find your attitudes rude if not openly hostile to us.
