We hunters have an inexorable connection to the past; we thrive on stories of our forefathers and their exploits, gear and trophies. Vintage firearms and replica firearms are a definite means of reconnecting with the past; shooting or hunting with a period-specific firearm brings a special element to the event. Whether a muzzleloader or cool lever gun, an older type of rifle can be breath of fresh air in a synthetic and stainless world. Here are some of the new historical and replica firearms for 2018.

Davide Pedersoli 1854 Lorenz Rifle

Hailing from Austria, the Lorenz rifle was a prominent player in many European conflicts, as well as our own Civil War. It is a .54-caliber muzzleloader, with a percussion lock and nice adjustable rear sight. Two barrel bands and a pair of sling swivels adorn the action, and the 37-inch barrel gives both a long sighting radius and plenty of accuracy. The rifle features a full-length walnut stock and steel buttplate. For the military enthusiast, the Lorenz represents a time-honored design.

Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine

It's had a movie named after it, and it gained icon status among the devotees of lever-action rifles. For 2018, Winchester introduces the Saddle Ring Carbine, available in .38 Special/.357 Magnum, .44-40 Winchester, and .45 Colt. The barrel band, strap buttplate, non-checkered walnut stock and saddle ring are all present. A 20-inch barrel features a blade front sight and ladder-style rear sight, and the tang is even drilled and tapped for a flip-up tang sight to increase the sighting radius. The "Gun That Won The West" can be easily strapped to your saddle again in 2018. MSRP $1,299.99

Uberti Model 1873 Outlaws and Lawmen "Doc" Pistol

Inspired by some famous guns of the West, Italian-made Uberti Firearms has released the "Outlaws and Lawmen" series. Included was a handsome pistol inspired by John Henry "Doc" Holliday, the famous tubercular dentist at the OK Corral shootout. Chambered in .45 Colt, the six-shooter sports a 4 ¾-inch barrel, fixed sights and some attractive birdshead grips. Designed to be a 'gentleman's' pistol, the "Doc" makes a neat package. MSRP $809

Cimarron Wild Bill Hickok '51 Conversion Pistol

This is a looker, for sure. Inspired by the famous gunman, the Wild Bill Hickok conversion pistol features a steel frame, brass trigger guard and strap, and some handsome laser engraving. Chambered in .38 Special, with a 7 ½-inch barrel, the color case hardening is a pleasure to look at, as well as to carry. With traditional appointments like a brass bead sight and octagon barrel, in a cartridge that is readily available and perfectly reliable for personal protection, the Hickok '51 conversion will certainly garner attention. MSRP $1189

Uberti 1873 Rifle

Seems that 1873 is all the rage this year, with Uberti offering an 1873 of their own, in a fancy package. The large lever loop (in the fashion of John Wayne) allows for a unique look and aids when using the firearm with gloves on, and the deer engraving on the left side of the receiver lends a 19th century Germanic flair to the rifle. The engraving is hand chased by Atelier Giovanelli, making each piece slightly unique. The color-case hardened loop is also finished by hand, for a smooth feel right out of the box. Chambered in .45 Colt, with a 20-inch octagon barrel, the Uberti 1873 has a 10 +1 capacity. MSRP $1,849

Cimarron 1873 U.S. Marshall Carbine Rifle

Recommended

Is it 2018, or 1873? Cimarron gets on the Conestoga Wagon with their own take on the famous 1873, with the U.S. Marshall carbine, this time chambered in .44 Remington Magnum. With a walnut stock, 18-inch barrel, and saddle ring, the U.S. Marshall will make a perfectly viable choice for hunting deer, black bear and other similar-sixed game animals, in a classic lever gun configuration. The adjustable rear sight will allow you to put your bullets exactly where you need to, and the flexibility of the .44 Magnum offers all sorts of shooting and hunting possibilities. MSRP $1402

Winchester Model 1892 Carbine Rifle

Some folks consider the '92 Winchester to be among the handiest rifles of that era, and Winchester has brought it back for 2018. Designed by none other than John M. Browning, the 92 Carbine is a reverent version of the classic firearm. Available with a 20-inch barrel, and chambered in .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .44-40 and .45 Colt, the satin finish of the walnut stock feels good in the hands, and working that classic action makes virtually any shooter smile. MSRP $1,069.99
