We tore into the box like kids on Christmas morning and laid the two new Rugers on the table, one a stainless 1911 and the other a compact, polymer-frame 9mm. My colleague Dick Metcalf immediately went for the 1911, a pistol he has loved for fully three decades. I, being younger, picked up the plastic. Our boss,  Editor Jim Bequette, relished the irony and said, “No, gentlemen,” then swapped the pistols in our hands. Evidently, Jim wanted a different take—mine—on an old design.
