Boddington was born and raised in Kansas, where his hunting career started early with quail and pheasants with his father and grandfather, progressing quickly to deer and pronghorn in neighboring states.

He graduated from Kansas University in 1974 and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has been a full-time editor and/or writer since leaving active duty in 1979, the year he joined then-Petersen Publishing Company.

Boddington's hunting experience has taken him to all the continents and all parts of the United States, including several dozen African safaris. He has published more than 2,000 magazine articles and is the author of 14 books, all on hunting, shooting and the outdoors. He is still active in the Marine Corps Reserve and has served overseas as a part of a Combined/Joint Task Force in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
