LL Cool J Thwarts Home Invasion…With His Fists

by Richard Nance   |  August 24th, 2012 14

LL_Cool_J_RomaFictionFestA man, whom law enforcement officials say may suffer from “mental issues,” is now suffering from a broken nose and jaw thanks to a very poor decision.

According to, the man, 56-year-old Jonathan A. Kirby, who has been described as a transient, broke into the home of rapper-turned-actor James Todd Smith, better known as LL Cool J, at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. A former rap superstar, LL is now best known as a member of the NCIS: Los Angeles cast.

LL apparently awoke to the sound of his residential burglary alarm and heard a commotion downstairs.  He went downstairs to investigate and confronted the unlucky intruder.

For those unfamiliar with LL, he is a physical specimen — not the kind of guy most would want to mess with. One of his most recognized songs is titled “Mama Said Knock You Out,” and chances are he could.

LL went “hands-on” with Kirby, and as you might have guessed, the encounter didn’t fare too well for the crook. LL detained the subject until police arrived. Although LL was unharmed, Kirby needed treatment for a broken jaw and nose. He’s probably lucky he went to the hospital instead of the morgue.

LL’s rep said, “He is committed to keeping his family safe and is cooperating with authorities.” According to police, LL will not be charged in the incident, but Kirby, a third-strike offender, is being charged with first-degree burglary with a person present and faces a maximum sentence of 38 years to life in prison.

“Just like Muhammad Ali, they called him Cassius
“Watch me bash this beat like a skull…

Good job, LL! I love stories with happy endings.

  • Dave Hicks

I knew I liked this guy for something

  • Mack Missiletoe

Mama could have said 'give him a hug' and the intruder would still be in trouble :D

  • charles

Brave man to see his burglar alarm tripped and hear a commotion then go down stairs unarmed. Even if he doesn't own a firearm I am surprised he didn't grab a bat.

    • Wolvie

Well, we really don't know for sure he went down totally unarmed.

We just have the official report that was taken after the fact.

Still, I applaud him for taking down a lowlife and protecting his property, family and life.

    • B. Wayne

      He had some fists

  • Robert Johnston

When LL Cool J said "Mama Said Knock You Out"–he meant it!
    In Your Face, Sucka!

  • Sore Thumbs

The intruder was lucky…if it were me there it would likely have been his funeral instead. 12Ga 00 Buck to the groin

  • raazorblade

That is all well and good if you are young, strong and muscled up like he is. But if you are almost 70 and been broke up from your toes to the top of your head and back down again like I have I will trust my .12 guage thank you….

If LL Cool J had investigated the cause of the alarm and caught a bullet in the face from an armed intruder, instead of confronting a 56 year old demented criminal, then we might be discussing the wisdom of a muscle bound celebrity wantabe tough guy's decision to confront an intruder without being armed.

Alternatively, if the intruder had been a physically fit ex-con, all bulked up from lifting weights in the joint before being released on parole, then maybe we would have found out if playing the role of a former Navy SEAL on TV really qualifies you as a tough guy.

  • Colonel Klink

From the homeless guy's perspective, it's kind of sad too.
Out of stupidity he had to burglarize a home. How stupid. With his third offense his health plan will now be taken care off that's for sure.
LL Cool did what many of us would have done, he was just curious and probably in disbelief that anybody would be be there. The guy had mental issues and I suspect was the perfect patsy for LL Cools new attack move.
Maybe the guy didn't even see this coming. I'm not condoning the burglary by any means either. Just sayin.

  • Dirty Devan

Doesn't carry a Sig Saucer in the series. Also that series is linked to the new version of Hawaii 5-0.

  • SomBob

Great. Now, LL will have to be tested for Hep C, AIDS, other blood diseases for the next year or so. Not a smart thing to do on his part. Why do you think anyone responding to trauma wears those silly-looking blue gloves?

  • Ricardo

I have to admit that I'm no LL Cool J – but I think we'd all love to try. I just stick to the ranges and build my finger strength! Haha! is my go-to range. It's a lot of fun.

  • john howard

Unfortunately, living in California, he will probably be sued by the criminal and his homeowers insurance will have to pay a bundle to the guy.
