G&A TV: Hornady LEVERevolution FTX Ammunition

by Guns & Ammo TV   |  June 12th, 2014 5

Loading traditional spire-point bullets into the magazine tube of a lever-action rifle is a legitimate safety issue. Consequently, hunters using lever guns have been severely limited to 19th Century technology.

Hornady has since solved the long-standing dilemma with their LEVERevolution line of ammunition. Premium FTX bullets with elasti-polymer tips can now be loaded into lever-action magazine tubes without fear of accidentally detonating primers. FTX tips absorb the forces of cartridges shifting in the mag tube during rifle recoil, preventing one cartridge from impacting another with enough force to set off a neighboring cartridge.

The result? Lever-action rifles can now be loaded with 21st Century ammunition.

This may have been news seveal years ago. Now it’s just a reprint of a very old article. Must be a very slow innovation year.

Marlin guide guns in 45.70 frequently have difficulty LOADING this ammo. It hangs up when inserting this ammo into the loading gate. Works fine once you get it into the mag tube. Try some before you buy.

I very badly wanted these to work in my Marlin 336, but my gun didn’t like them. I’d been using 170 grain Winchester Silvertips for years, which patterned 1½” @ 100 yards and put quite a few bucks in my freezer. But my gun sprayed the Hornady Leverevolutions all over the target; 6″ was the best group I could get. Sure wish they woulda worked. I stuck with the Silvertips.

They work fine in my 45-70 Marlin Guide Rifle, been using it for years.

I use these in my pump action Savage model 170. That little Savage is a real tack driver with the 160 Leverlution ammo. I took a deer with it last season and the bullet performed as expected.
