Read & React: Pizza Restaurant Owner Thwarts Armed Robbery

by G&A Online Editors   |  August 21st, 2013 1

“We don’t call 911. We use Colt.”

A poster emblazoned with that warning hangs on the wall of Steve Sahin’s restaurant, Pizza Heaven II, in New Haven, Conn. Last week, two wannabe robbers found out the hard way Sahin isn’t bluffing.

According to The (Hartford, Conn.) Courant, two masked men entered Pizza Heaven II shortly before midnight Friday brandishing a rifle and demanding Sahin empty his cash register and his pockets.

“I was scared,” Sahin said, but complied with the robbers’ demands.

However, the robbers got greedy and demanded Sahin take them to his office in the back to grab more cash. The robbers were shocked to see a pistol in Sahin’s drawer, which he pulled on the robbers. Surprised, the wannabe rifleman stumbled and dropped his weapon—which turned out to be a mere pellet rifle.

Check out the video from WTIC in Hartford, Conn.

“He threw his gun down and slammed into the screen door, and he ran out,” Sahin said.

The duo high-tailed it out of the restaurant with Sahin and his employees in pursuit. The robbers—18-year-old Carmine Watkins and a 17-year-old accomplice—outran the pizza militia, but were apprehended by police 20 minutes later and identified by the employees. The two face charges of first-degree robbery, second-degree larceny and conspiracy.

Sahin said while it was a scary situation, he is just happy to come out of it alive.

“I have two kids at home, and I told them and they were crying too,” Sahin said. “They told me, ‘They might shoot you. You might be [dead] too.’”

How would you have reacted in a similar situation?

My reaction would have been different because I would have been carrying my gun and the perps wouldn’t have left the building.
