Read & React: Liquor Store Owner Pulls Gun on Armed Robber

by G&A Online Editors   |  June 17th, 2013 3

Arturo Taveras is no stranger to being victimized by armed violence.

The 69-year-old owner of McCann’s Liquors in Lawrence, Mass., was pistol whipped and tied up by armed robbers back in March 2011, leaving scars on the elderly man’s head.

Those men are now in a state prison, and they could be joined by another who tried to hold up Taveras.

According to WFXT-TV in Boston, Taveras was working in his store Sunday, June 2, when a masked man entered at about 10:30 p.m. The man pulled a pistol and demanded Taveras to empty his cash register.

But Taveras had other plans, pulling his own pistol on the would-be robber, who fled the scene before a single shot could be fired.

Check out the video from WCVB-TV in Boston.

“I was shocked to see him, then I realized right away that it was an attempted robbery because he came into the store with a gun in his hand. I think I reacted well because he turned around and left … When I find myself in situations like this, I always think ‘the coward one dies first’ so I push all fears aside,’” Taveras told The (North Andover, Mass.) Eagle-Tribune.

The suspect got away and remains at large, but Taveras said he is just thankful to be alive.

“It was God who was there with me. Whomever believes in God lacks nothing,” he said.

While police continue their search for the suspect, they applauded Taveras’ reaction.

“He had a permit to carry. An individual came in and pointed a gun at him; he’s within the law at that point to pull his revolver as well,” said Lawrence Police Chief John Romero.

Indeed, Taveras did the right thing when confronted with a clear threat to his life. Even though he didn’t fire a shot, Taveras made it well-known he was armed, and if push came to shove, was prepared to end the threat. Sometimes that’s all you need to do.

How would you have reacted in a similar situation?

Why isn’t this guy in jail? He probably frightened the poor robber and lowered his self esteem; all because the greedy, capitalist SOB wasn’t willing to share. If only a few more Senators has my esteemed wisdom, Senators Swinestein, Charles Scumberg, and I could have prevented this outrage. Sincerely Presdent OblahBlah

It’s getting to the point that an underprivileged youth, just trying to turn his life around, can’t even make a living at larceny in the People’s Communist Republic of Massachusetts. We need more “common sense gun control” to keep weapons of war out of the hands of the law abiding, and in the hands of the liberal-democrat voting crowd.

Do you think this “alledged” would-be robber will be ‘scared straight’. I doubt it. Unfortunately the punk will likely simply look for an easier target to steal/cripple/murder; it is too bad the owner wasn’t able to blow the punk away. I’m sure all the gun control advocates would like to know the poor misunderstood lad’s view on various proposed gun control measures so that even more ridiculous, unconstitutional legislation can be enacted.
