8 Ways to Convince Anyone to Go Shooting

by B. Gil Horman   |  May 31st, 2012 38

As passionate as shooters can be about protecting their gun rights, it’s important not to get too caught up in Us vs. Them thinking. Plenty of folks who don’t shoot might enjoy it if their concerns or misconceptions about firearms were addressed properly. Here are a few common arguments against shooting that could, if handled diplomatically, be broken and ultimately lead to a friend joining you on the shooting range for the first time.

Gun People Are Weird ? ? ? ? ……. Whadda ya mean I'm weird ? ! …. WAIT ! ….. hang on a second , I gotta load up my 12 gauge in case we get attacked by that crazed hoard of zombie watermelons …. Now … where was I ? Oh yeah …. Weird ? ! Just because I like to do the chicken dance with real chickens DOES NOT MEAN I'M WEIRD ! Why , if you want to see weird ….. just look at Senators Charles Schumer and Diane Feinstien , now THEY'RE WEIRD ! Why , I never ….. well ……. ok ….. I did once ….. but all involved agreed that we would never speak of it again …. Weird ? HA ! … State of Illinois … State of Illinois … State of Illinois … What ? ……. oh .. oh yeah . Weird ? HA !

    • Sally G

8 ways ? I only see one. Yes, I know, click on the arrow things at the side. No, really, not doing that. Please check out http://www.wired.com to see how the 'view all' option works. The G&A website is exceptionally slow. At least the view all option would let me go away and get a snack/coffee while it all loads.

Photo 4 got my attention. Sure the magazine clearly is not in the gun, and there may be a round in the chamber, but what the hell is the guys finger doing on the trigger? This is not the first, or even the second time I have complained about this very thing.

    • Jeepers Creepers

The muzzle is up. If it did go off the projectile might do some good and land on his head. Looks like an ACP type round. I can't get to excited about such a under powered round. But each to his own likes.

      • Guest

        So what?

    • Clearcutter

And the cat knows this, too, which is why its eyes look worried. :p

  • CXL

As far as guns killing people..yes. At that point remind that person about the popular slogan of a few yrs ago–

Teddy car has killed more people than all my guns. Might explain that you dont like the saying (yea) but it is still true.

  • Jeepers Creepers

Yes I'm A weird gun owner that loves the big bore hand guns with lots of recoil. But I have taken alot of non shooters out to shoot the handcannons. Since I have to reload for all my hand guns except the 9mm I can down load the charge so the recoil would be next to nothing. They seem to get a kick out of that. I hunt 300 to 1,000 pound game animals with a hand gun for the meat and the wild flavor. It is not cheap. $2,100 for maybe 45 pounds of meat. The big bore hand guns are 50 caliber. I own three.

    • Sally G

U got the weird part right

      • Jeepers Creepers

        Thank You.

    • Juan 2 3

      your a idiot talking s8t

  • Ceapea

What's up with the revolver (rimmed) cases laying on the ground around the Glock in picture 3?
Did the shooter (of the revolver) dump his cases on the the now on the ground, Glock guy just to say "so there!"?

    • Jeepers Creepers

I own a Canook 100 9MM (CZ clone). I love it. very accrute out to 45 yards rapid fire. A lot less felt recoil than most of my handguns.
But for hunting and long range (180 yards plus) shooting I still like the revolver or the single shots ( good out to 600 yards). But the 9mm is cheap to shot and I can put alot of rounds thru it. I have never owned a plastic firearm, "YET"; maybe someday.

      • Guest

What does any of that have to do with convincing people to go shooting?

      • Donny

and why do we care about your CZ clone?

        • Jeepers Creepers

          Sorry! Forgive me.

  • Jeepers Creepers

This is to Alan_T. If your state is so anti gun have you ever tried to move to a state that is 100% pro gun. I can think of 6 states that would rather have you armed than not. If you have not thought about moving to another state. Have you tried to contact your congress men and women. Lastly what about sueing the state for the lack of protection from harm. I know that I could not live in a state that would not protect me or let me protect myself. So I'll stay out west were men are still free.

  • Alan_T

Not that it is any of your business Jeepers but ,I came back to this miserable state ( Illinois ) because my 92 year old father fell and broke his hip and he refuses to leave his house . As to contacting my elected officials , I am an active member of the NRA – ILA ( National Rifle Association – Institute for Legislative Action ) . In order to bring suit against the state ( of Illinois ) , legally , I would FIRST have to show and be able to prove damages . Which given my position , might be a little difficult to do . As a firearms instructor , part of my duties is teaching self protection , so I think I can protect myself just fine . I am thrilled for both you and Colorado , however you might consider staying on topic Jeepers , but thank you for your concern .

    • Jeepers Creepers

Your Welcome! Wow I learned one thing. Everybody is a firearm instructor on this website. Except Me.

      • Juan 2 3

jeepers your still a idiot talking s8t

    • Juan 2 3

sorry to hjear about your father alan. thanks for stuff what you do

  • Alan_T

Poor Jeepers , I notice you are falling back on the old passive – aggressive rouse of false humility , it's not any more attractive on you than it was on that " troll " dad . Have you ever wondered why you illicit such negative reactions from nearly everyone , Jeepers ? With the exception of one occasion where you were MORALLY WRONG condemning a person without the benefit of hearing or trial and with no knowledge of facts and circumstances YOU pronounced them as guilty , I leave you alone because I don't think you can help being the way God made you . However , I don't take B . S . from recruits / rookies on the firing line ……. and I'm not going to take B . S . from you

  • Alan_T

I'm not sure how to respond Juan , but , thank you and you're welcome .

    • old vet

Allen, always enjoy seeing what you have to say. Even if you like me get blocked once in a while, there are a few worse places out there than Illinois. Be well

      • old vet

Sorry, miss spelled Alan My Dumb!

        • Alan_T

Not a problem vet , I've had a life time to get used to it , HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

      • Alan_T

Thanks vet , I'm more used to being called something unflattering ! Worse places huh ? … like ending in " stan " ? Maybe we could get a petition up to change the name from Illinois to Illinoisastan ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I've been wondering where you've been vet , I haven't seen you in awhile . How's things in Missouri ?

        • old vet

Things are good, getting ready for grandkid number 6,

  • old vet

Back to subject, I have found there are many out there with a new interest in shooting, because of programs like Top Shot, American guns and such. The trick is to start them out safely and to always be constructive. I find clay targets at the trap range or the plates with a handgun are always fun, you get to see results from a good shot. Just keep it safe and fun.

  • Tom

I've taken three new shooters to the range in the last 6 months. Two of them have decided to purchase their first handgun and one of those is working on getting their carry permit.

One of them was very recoil averse and had only shot a 1911 on one occasion. He fell in love with my XD45c and purchased an XDm Competition in .45ACP. While I'm happy that he started shooting, I'm also jealous as hell that he bought the gun I want!!!! LOL.

The other person is a guy I've known since the 4th grade and had just been disinterested in guns. I took him shooting and he loved it! He now owns a Kimber 1911 in .45. So now I'm jealous again. I can't win.

The next time I take someone shooting I'm going to tell them that I'm thinking of buying one of those .22 flare gun conversion kits just to be safe.

3 Good reasons to go shooting in Tennessee, Machine guns, short barreled shotguns and rifles, and last but not least suppressors. 1 good reason for fireworks in Tennessee, hand grenades. Yep you to can own it in the land of the free, Tennessee.

  • Mack Missiletoe

    Mack's Lovely Natural Poem:

Bunnies aren't cute after you see their insides
Squirrels are tasty when you need that protein
    Birds poop on your head
Three reasons to shoot and eat

    • old vet

      Strange, strange, so very strange.

  • old vet

There are those who have such a negative mind-set that no matter what, they will never try shooting, period. However there are also many who have just never had a chance to try shooting who can learn how fun it can be if introduced positively. I have found that if start someone out properly almost everyone can learn to enjoy the sport to some degree. When working with a new shooter it helps to always be positive and teach safety and proper handling in a fun way. Never be superior or braggish. Everyone started out with that first shot.

  • Sunshine State

I watched a police officer struggle with a 30/30 lever rifle at the range-unintentional fire.

Good thread here though amongst all the flyers…..yes,properly,with wisdom, introducing non shooters to guns is key.
