Tactical Scenario: Philadelphia Bus Shooting Video

by George Wehby   |  August 25th, 2011 27

In the surveillance video shown below of the Philadelphia bus shooting, a group of passengers are trapped on public transportation while two gunmen open fire from the outside. The gunmen were responding to a mother who got into a verbal altercation with another passenger over her disciplining her son.

The shooters were called to the scene by the mother to confront the other passenger in a vengeful manner. Her family members show up armed and begin opening fire into the bus.

Here is the scenario: You are on a public bus and overhear two passengers getting into a verbal altercation. One of the passengers makes a quick phone call and asks those on the phone to meet her at an upcoming stop to deal with this individual. Before you know it, the bus stops, the one passenger gets off and you see through the bus window two individuals approaching holding firearms.

What would you do if you could not get off ahead of time and were stuck on the bus?  What if you are carrying concealed?  Was the verbal altercation enough for you to get off at the next stop and catch another bus if you had the time?

Personally, I would have gotten off as soon as possible considering her threat of calling back-up. If I were caught and could not get off early, I would hope I would engage those individuals in protection of my life, stopping them before they could shoot me. The scenario plays out different ways in my mind. Truly scary stuff.  Travel safely!

It looks like those guys were so scared they only shot at the bus, they did not single out the guy that talked to the mother, there is not much you can do in a situation like that even if you do CCW, however I do not ride the bus and that is how I avoid trouble like that, I understand however not everyone has such an option.

  • Mark

Unless you wish to become a felon, you are not going to be carrying a firearm on public transportation

    • keith

Depends on your local laws. Where I live a person with a ccw permit is allowed to carry on public transportation. Ever open carry is allowed, but that would spook too many people who don't understand the law, even police officers.

    • David

Prove that. In our city it is not illegal to CCW on a bus.

      • Mark

        Missouri revised statutes

578.305.4. Any passenger who boards a bus with a dangerous or deadly weapon or other means capable of inflicting serious bodily injury concealed upon his person or effects is guilty of the felony of "possession and concealment of a dangerous or deadly weapon" upon a bus. Possession and concealment of a dangerous and deadly weapon by a passenger upon a bus shall be a class C felony. The provisions of this subsection shall not apply to duly elected or appointed law enforcement officers or commercial security personnel who are in possession of weapons used within the course and scope of their employment; nor shall the provisions of this subsection apply to persons who are in possession of weapons or other means of inflicting serious bodily injury with the consent of the owner of such bus, or his agent, or the lessee or bailee of such bus.

        • Philip

Stupid law… so how about this quote I picked up when taking CCW classes from a local Sheriff's office in SC. In any situation, "would you rather be carried by 6 or tried by 12?" If you are carrying concealed you will not be arrested cause no one will see it… if you shoot a guy that is shooting at innocent bus passengers you will not be convicted.

      • Jacob the Israeli

        Owned.

    • BS Detector

This took place in Philadelphia, PA, not Missouri there Einstein!

  • 2ndAmendmentisourfir

    @Mark

Only if you live in a Gestapo state like New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois or California. Here in Missouri we have the right and dare I say responsibility to carry even on public transportation. How is that Liberal retardedness working for you in those states?

    • ArmedIntellectual

See Mark's reply above. Good game, buddy…

"578.305.4. And yes California does suck. We ought to throw out the overly liberal legislature with a more centrist one. Stupid extremists at both ends of the political spectrum take the joy out of life.

Aristotle said "hit the mean" for a damned good reason.

I was on the Metro subway in D.C. some months back, when two large, loud, and incredibly foul-mouthed black women got on the train. The car was about half-empty, and when those two started polluting the air with their language, nobody said a word in protest, they (including Yours Truly) just got up and moved to either end of the car, isolating the two oblivious offenders.

  • brian

I can't believe their defense. It was not an assault because nobody was hurt.

    Just amazing.

    • RIchard

Should not surprise you Brian. They are the chosen few that don't give a hoot about anything.

  • ScottieG59

This one would be tough to predict or anticipate, except for the fact that metro DC is not very safe. Inside a bus is not a good fighting position especially with the typical concealed carry handgun.

I think the only lesson I can learn from this is not to threaten to call authorities on a wrong doer. Just do it when it is safe without announcing it to the person.

This also reminds me why I do not live in an urban area. Honestly, the people in the rural area are no better, but the density is much lower as is the perceived risk.

    • Dale

Unfortunately all of us can't live in rural areas. If we did, those areas would not be rural anymore. Think about that one.

  • Ethan

This entire situation is totally absurd! Thank goodness the mother finally disciplined her child, but to call in a "Hit" on someone who disapproves of a spanking that is completely ridiculous! She should be arrested and charged for conspiracy to murder.

  • Steve

I'm from Miami, Fl. I now live in Montana because of bullshit like that. I have a Florida concealed weapons permit and while in Fla. I ever went anywhere unarmed. I was stressed out by the behavior of assholes down there.

There were times when jerkoffs got in my face, and I could have permantly cured the problem, but I'm a responsible CCW holder. I can.t believe the amount of people who think the world owes them somethting and they can do whatever they want without consequences.

I love it up here where most people still say please and thank you and hold the door open for each other.

  • http://1989Ranger Howard hill

As of tomorrow PA has the Castle Doctrine law in effect so concealed permit holders would be able to legally take action without fear of prosecution. Of course I just stay away from Philly, with the flash mobs (which is racially motivated violence) and the other problems that they have had recently I really have no reason to go there.

  • Jim Raymond

Yet another example of White justice protecting the rights of the "Gangstas" I say it is time to throw these liberal judges and politicians out of office before we have gang rule like they have in Mexico.

    • Mr. Ryan

Lol wtf does "liberal"ism have to do with dumbass gangbangers? Typical generalization / blanket hatred of anything "liberal"

F*ck the labels of "liberal" or "conservative" — just encourages more division in a great country…

      • Tom

Exactly. Labels like "liberals vs. conservatives" are the manifestations of the Corporate Elitist Media who keep the citizenry divided and calling each other names, rather than recognizing that America is now owned and operated solely by the 1%, of the 1% and for the 1%. Folks think I'm a liberal till they see me at the range. This makes them ignorant. Should they persist in calling me a "liberal", then that makes them stupid.

  • WWOLFIE55

They should be HUNTED DOWN like rabid animals that they are !

  • Bill

FERAL HUMANS, Hope something happens soon,I'm getting old

and I afraid I'll miss everything

  • Adam

Oh the joys of public transportation! From he News report it almost sounded like the men are getting off scott free?!? They probably are not even supposed to own guns due to some prior offense!

  • Josef

when carrying concealed in this situation, probably during your commute you would probably want fast expanding bullets which can still penetrate a window. So most likely J.H.P. and at this range in question its not caliber that's in question but accuracy. Personally, I'm a revolver guy. Don't let this happen to you.

  • Tom B.

What about the criminal that made the phone call to have her so called relatives come and avenge her. She is an accessory to the crime as well. All of them probably have "priors". Scumbags!!

  • Ward

I think conceal carry on public Transportation is legal in Missouri. (unless specifcally posted)
