This season, George is using an EOTech EXPS3 on his Ruger Scout rifle. The Scout is an ideal application for this rugged holographic sight because its reticle is designed for both close quarters and distance shooting—just like the Scout.
The EOTech’s EXPS3 projects a red reticle with a large, 65-minute outer ring and a one-minute aiming dot. Best aiming practice is to shoot with both eyes open so the reticle appears in the same focal plane as the target, and so George can maintain complete situational awareness of everything going on around him.
The reticle is adjustable both horizontally and vertically in ½ minute increments, so when a long range shot is needed, George can take a rest and make the shot with considerable precision. At close quarters, the large ring is easily visible for quick response to a threat.
You don’t necessarily get to choose the environment for a personal defense situation, so the EOTech reticle has a broad range of brightness settings. When first turned on, the reticle comes on at its brightest setting.
Brightness can be adjusted in steps with individual clicks of the brightness controls, or the control button can be held down to change the brightness quickly and continuously over its range. An auto shut-off feature helps to maintain a long battery life—though the battery life is 600 hours on it’s brightest setting.
While not essential for a personal defense survival tool, our EXPS3 is equipped with optional night vision. If you don’t use night vision equipment, EOTech’s EXPS2 provides all of the EXPS3’s features without the night vision at a lower price.
On Personal Defense TV we take our sights and optics very seriously because even when defending yourself, you are accountable for every shot. We like that our EOTech stands up to abuse, offers a fast aiming option at close range, and still provides for precision delivery of a long shot if necessary.
